Automatic 4-Year Awards for New Freshman Students - beginning Fall 2018
The Minot State 4-Year award program provides a renewable 4-Year award opportunity for academically successful new freshman students. 

  • New freshman students must be admitted (Apply Now) to Minot State University by the priority deadline
    • July 1 for fall semester applicants and
    • December 1 for spring semester applicants.
  • Awards are based on:
    • final official unweighted high school grade point average (GPA).
    • ACT or SAT scores provided to the MSU Enrollment Services Office.

The combination of final unweighted high school GPA and best composite ACT or equivalent combined SAT score provided to Minot State determine the award amount per student. Awards will be disbursed equally between fall and spring semesters. All Awards are subject to change. No additional application other than the application for admission is required for this award..

Notice! Freshman Award Priority Deadline: July 1
(may continue to be awarded after the priority deadline, depending on funding availability)
  • New first year freshman student* with US or Canadian citizenship
  • All eligible fully admitted new freshman applicants will be evaluated based on the following information recorded by the MSU Enrollment Services Office:
    • Unweighted high school GPA or GED score of 165+ (for GED tests taken after 2014)
    • Composite ACT score or equivalent total SAT score
    • Must be fully admitted to MSU by July 1 for fall applicants and December 1 for spring applicants and meet the academic standards
    • New freshman students who start in the summer semester will be evaluated and awarded with the following fall semester applicants
    • Students fully admitted after the priority deadline may be considered if funding is available

        *Transfer students are not eligible for the Automatic 4-Year Award

Students must:

  • Be enrolled in 12 or more MSU credits by the end of the 100% refund period for the 16 week semester (Financial Aid census date) each fall and spring semester
    • Collaborative classes are not included in the 12 credit enrollment minimum
  • Be continuously enrolled in consecutive fall and spring semesters as an undergraduate
  • Maintain 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA 
  • Successfully complete 24 or more total MSU credits during the fall and spring semesters
    • Collaborative credits do not count as completed credits for the Automatic 4-Year Award
    • Remedial MSU credits do count as completed credits for the Automatic 4-Year Award
    • Successful completion requires a D or higher grade
    • Spring admits will be required to complete a minimum of 12 credits in their first semester to renew for the next year
    • Summer term can be used to make up credits to complete 24 total credits or to improve GPA if needed
    • Students who withdraw or do not complete the 24 total credits per academic year will not be eligible to renew the award for subsequent years

Automatic 4-Year Awards:

  • Are renewable for up to eight consecutive fall and spring semesters
  • Will be disbursed equally between fall and spring semesters
  • Will be evaluated for renewal at the end of spring semester each year
  • Will be discontinued when an undergraduate degree is posted
  • Will be reduced if review of final unweighted high school GPA is lower than the recorded in progress high school GPA
  • Are subject to change

Automatic 4-Year Awards will not be available to students:

  • Eligible for a more beneficial program such as the MSU Spouse Dependent Tuition Waiver or ND Veterans Dependent Tuition Waiver program
  • Enrolled in Study Abroad experiences with no regular MSU Tuition charged
  • Enrolled in programs that require remission of tuition to other organization
  • Pursuing a graduate degree
  • Transferring to MSU 

The Automatic 4-Year Award may be reduced or not available in situations where the student is eligible for direct tuition payment from a third party payer.

The maximum amount a student can receive from institutional funds cannot exceed an amount equal to the tuition, fees and books, and room and board (if living on campus). Institutional funds include tuition waivers and scholarships.
