How to Request a Tax Return Transcript

If income tax information for the student, parent, or spouse, if applicable, was not available or could not be used, you should provide the institution with an IRS Tax Return Transcript(s) or a signed copy of the income tax return and schedules 1, 2, and/or 3.

A Return Transcript may be obtained free of charge.

  1. online,
  2. mail or
  3. telephone

Requested Tax Year:

  • For the 2025-2026 Academic Year - fall 2025, spring 2026, summer 2026
    • request a 2023 Return Transcript
  • For the 2026-2027 Academic Year - fall 2026, spring 2027, summer 2027
    • request a 2024 Return Transcript

Available on the IRS website.

  • Click, Get your tax records and transcripts.
  • Click, Sign in to your online account. (If at any point, you cannot validate your identity or you lack access to a mobile phone, you may use, Get Transcript by Mail, see below)
  • Follow instructions to sign in with existing account or to create a new account.
  • Select, Tax Return Transcript, not Tax Account Transcript, and in the Tax Year field, select the requested tax year as defined above.
  • The transcript is displayed on-line upon successful completion of the IRS’s two-step authentication.
  • Submit the Tax Return Transcript to the MSU Financial Aid Office; include student’s name & MSU student ID# on the transcript.

  • Click, Get your tax record and transcripts.
  • Click, Get transcript by mail.
  • Request, Tax Return Transcript, not Tax Account Transcript, and in the Tax Year field, select the requested tax year as defined above.
  • Customer File Number – enter the student’s seven-digit MSU Student ID number.
  • Tax filers can expect to receive a paper IRS Return Transcript at the address included in their on-line request within 10 business days.
  • Submit the Return Transcript to the MSU Financial Aid Office; include student’s name & MSU Student ID# on the transcript.

  • Follow the telephone prompt instructions
  • IRS Tax Return Transcript is generally received within 10 business days from the IRS's receipt of the telephone request.
