Impact of S/U Grading

How S/U grading impacts Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) and renewal of renewable Minot State Award Programs

Fall 2020

The option for students to elect S/U grading for fall 2020 courses doesn’t change the requirements for Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress or renewal of Minot State Award programs.  Below are a few examples that may help clarify questions related to financial aid and the S/U options.

S/U grading does not impact GPA calculations. GPAs calculated from courses without S/U grading will continue to be used to determine Financial Aid SAP and for renewal of Award programs.  The S/U grading option for fall 2020 doesn’t change these requirements.
  • Examples:
    • For Financial Aid SAP status, a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher is required to maintain eligibility.
    • For Automatic 4 Year Awards, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher is required for renewal.

S grades will count as successfully completed and U grades will be considered not successfully completed for Financial Aid SAP and for renewal of Award programs.  The S/U grading option for fall 2020 doesn’t change these requirements.
  • Examples:
    • For Financial Aid SAP status, a cumulative rate of successful completion of 66.667% of all credits attempted is required.
    • For renewal of the Automatic 4 Year Awards, students must successfully complete a minimum of 24 Minot State credits per academic year.

Students must successfully complete their degree by the time they have attempted 150% of the published number of credits needed to complete their program of study. The S/U grading option for fall 2020 doesn’t change these requirements.

Students with all F and/or U grades will be considered Unofficial Withdrawals for the semester. Students who Unofficially Withdraw will be placed on Financial Aid Disqualification and we may be required to recalculate financial aid eligibility for these students depending upon when the student stopped participating in academic activities.  The S/U grading option for fall 2020 doesn’t change these requirements.
