Goals and Outcomes

Leadership Studies is an academic, interdisciplinary program focused on personal leadership development as well as leadership processes within group, organizational, and community contexts.

Student learning goals

  • Prepare for leadership roles and processes in 21st century society.
  • Develop cognitive and interpersonal leadership skills.

Student learning outcomes

  • Describe leadership theory and traditional approaches.
  • Articulate a leadership philosophy.
  • Gain a greater understanding of your own personal identities in order to examine how they impact your leadership and followership.
  • Gain knowledge of diverse cultures, intercultural communication, the dynamics of marginality and mattering, and the uses of power between groups.
  • Understand how ethics, morals, and values relate to leadership.
  • Critique theories for analyzing organizations and institutions and their relationship to society.
  • Develop an understanding of change processes and why people and organizations may resist change.
  • Understand and use a process for decision-making and problem-solving.
  • Engage with the greater Minot State and Minot community as a means to practice leadership knowledge and skills.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in written and oral communication.

Course Descriptions

LEAD 101 introduces students to basic components of personal leadership development, including the examination of leadership theories and styles, personal identity, diversity, communication, power, and ethics. Students will engage in self-reflective and experiential learning activities in order to make connections between course materials and real-world application.

General Education Category: CCS1 – Problem-Solving

LEAD 199 allows to students to apply leadership processes and concepts to situations and experiences.  Offerings may include examination of current events, travel opportunities, or special projects and programs.  Students will engage in self-reflective and experiential learning activities in order to make connections between course materials and real-world application.

LEAD 201 focuses on leadership through the lens of team development and organizational structures. In particular, this course will emphasize the role of leadership in change processes, decision-making, and problem-solving with teams.

General Education Category: CCS6 - Collaboration

LEAD 211 will examine both leadership theory and practice and how leadership has been portrayed in film.  Students will identify and analyze key leadership practices portrayed in the selected films.

LEAD 301 provides an opportunity for students to gain practical experience through a supervised leadership practicum. Students will work with their course instructor and field supervisor to develop a plan of study. Furthermore, students will also examine contemporary leadership topics through readings, speakers, and class discussions they can then apply to their practicum experiences.
