Northern Plains Writing Project kicks off with pre-institute
With a pre-institute session on May 30, The Northern Plains Writing Project launched its NPWP Institutes that begin July 6 and finish July 30 at Minot State University. In addition to writing and teaching, participating teachers will also read and discuss “Write Like This” and “Readicide,” both books written by Kelly Gallagher, who presented last year at the North Dakota Council of Teachers of English conference.
“We have 10 teachers this year, and Melissa Lytton, who is returning from last year’s Writing Project Institutes, to co-facilitate the institutes with me this year. Four teachers work for Minot schools, and the others come from Surrey, Ray, Makoti, Lignite, Glenburn and Mohall,” said Ron Fischer, English associate professor and NPWP director. “We have some very creative teachers returning this year, and I know how good they will be for the new teachers who are coming to us from some pretty small schools. I’m looking forward to this nice mix of experiences.”
Teachers will be presenting the writing lessons they develop during a session of the NDCTE conference on July 23. Those who attend NPWP will also have a chance to travel to Minneapolis in November to attend the National Council of Teachers of English Convention.
“The teachers always say, ‘The Writing Project changed by life.’ I don’t know if the change goes that far, but it does change how they teach writing; and I can never forget the looks of amazement on their faces when they go to a national conference and see the many thousands of teachers passionate about teaching writing. In this day of assessment fixation, it is really something to see teachers develop the magic that helps students truly learn to love writing and reading.”
