Scholarships

The MSU College of Business offers a number of scholarships each academic year which vary in amount from approximately $500 to $1000 each. Applications are accepted each spring term with a February 15 deadline for submission. Recipients are typically notified of their award for the upcoming academic year by May and receive ½ in the fall and ½ in the spring. To be eligible for these scholarships, a student must be enrolled full-time at MSU with a declared business major. Additional criteria vary by scholarship and are listed below.

Aas Family Scholarship

  • Full time MSU student working towards a Bachelor's degree with a major offered under the College of Business
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Must have completed a minimum of 40 credit hours
  • Preference given to a student involved in a University-approved service organization, Greek organization, or Student Government

Accounting Department Scholarship

Adelaide & Eleanor Johnson Scholarship

  • Undergraduate Sophomore, Junior, or Senior
  • Preference given to Business Education Major
  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • If the recipient is a senior with one semester left, the value of the scholarship will be halved.

American Petroleum Institute (API) Scholarship

  • Energy Economics & Finance Major

Baldwin and Shirley Martz Scholarship

  • Majoring in Accounting
  • Upper class student (or possibly sophomore in unusual circumstances)
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Planning to take the CPA exam
  • Citizenship values may be considered
  • Not based on financial need, but on academic merit

Ben & Theresa Wald Scholarship

  • Undergraduate Freshman, Sophomore, Junior or Senior
  • Resident of North Dakota
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 (entering Freshman must meet eligibility requirements used for athletics)
  • Position paper on business ethics not to exceed 3 pages must be provided for review
  • If the recipient is a senior with one semester left, the value of the scholarship will be halved.

Brady Martz & Associates PC

  • Senior or outstanding junior
  • Accounting Major
  • North Dakota native preferred
  • Strong GPA
  • Award based on merit rather than need
  • Plans to sit for the CPA Exam

Bruce & Diane Walker Scholarship

  • Full-time COB student

Burt and Gwen Traub CoB Scholarship

  • Full-time North Dakota resident
  • Undergraduate junior or senior
  • Major in Finance
  • Minimum CoB GPA of 3.0
  • Preference given to active member of either Mu Sigma Tau Fraternity or Phi Beta Lambda

Dale D. Atwood Memorial Scholarship

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Undergraduate student (entering Freshmen must meet athletic eligibility requirements since they have no established college GPA)
  • Preference given to a student-athlete on one of MSU’s NCAA team
  • If the recipient is a senior with one semester left, the value of the scholarship will be halved.

David & Dolly Gowan Scholarship

  • Undergraduate freshman, sophomore, junior or senior
  • Preference given to an athlete on one of MSU’s NCAA teams
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 (entering freshmen must meet athletic eligibility requirements since they have no established college GPA)
  • If the recipient is a senior with one semester left, the value of the scholarship will be halved.

Don L. Barber Memorial Scholarship

  • Undergraduate Junior or Senior OR graduate student in the Masters in Management
  • Priority given to students with demonstrated honesty, integrity, and charitable involvement in their community

Doris A. Slaaten Scholarship

  • Academic achievement with a cumulative GPA 3.0
  • Financial need

Edson and Margaret Larson Foundation

  • A minimum of two years at Minot State University
  • Demonstrated community service and academic/entrepreneurial success
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA with preference given to applicants with a 3.25
  • Resident of North Dakota or graduated from a ND high school
  • Intention to pursue graduate studies at a North Dakota or Minnesota Institution
  • Intention to work in North Dakota following graduation
  • Submit a typed essay addressing the following areas:
    • A summary of their various leadership activities, work experience, college and community extracurricular activities including any leadership roles, and their leadership philosophy
    • Plans after graduation and plans regarding future academic studies (i.e. graduate school, professional school, etc.)
    • Intent or commitment to return to ND to pursue their career or profession
  • Current resume

E. James McIntyre Scholarship

  • Full time MSU student in the College of Business
  • Minimum GPA of 3.00
  • Preference may be given to a College of Business student who is also participating in MSU athletics

First Western Bank & Trust Scholarship

  • Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
  • Preference to resident of Minot or surrounding area (75 miles)

Integrity Viking Funds Business Scholarship

  • GPA partial consideration
  • Financial need
  • Preference given to student(s) with an interest in Accounting or Finance

J. Bernard Busse Memorial Scholarship

  • Minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5
  • Undergraduate student (entering Freshmen must meet athletic eligibility requirements since they have no established college GPA)
  • Preference given to a student-athlete on one of MSU’s NCAA teams
  • If the recipient is a senior with one semester left, the value of the scholarship will be halved

  • College of Business Student

Joan Mattson Scholarship in Memory of Kevin Mattson

  • Energy Economics and Finance Majors
  • Recommendation of the Department of Accounting & Finance, at the discretion of the Dean or the College of Business

John and Leslie Coughlin Scholarship

  • Undergraduate and full time freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior
  • Minimum 2.50 cumulative GPA
  • If the recipient is a senior with one semester left, the value of the scholarship will be halved

Lee Badertscher Memorial Scholarship

  • Undergraduate Junior or Senior
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5

Luther Hanson & Diann Witham Hanson Scholarship

  • Preference given to Management Major
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25
  • Preference is also given to a student who has/will participate in a study abroad program

Magic City Networking Scholarship

  • Undergraduate Junior or Senior
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0
  • Expected to attend a Magic City Networking Event

Marv and Barb Semrau Scholarship

  • Undergraduate Sophomore, Junior, or Senior
  • Marketing Major

Mary Marley Memorial Scholarship

  • Entrepreneurship student preferred

Mel Hoover and Spencer Hoover Scholarship

  • Undergraduate sophomore, junior or senior
  • CoB major
  • Financial need

MSIS Scholarship Endowment

  • MSIS Graduate student enrolled in at least 6 credits with a GPA of 3.0 or greater

Ove Jorgensen Scholarship

  • Undergraduate Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or special status student
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5
  • Completed 24 hours at MSU (including current semester course work)
  • Consideration given to demonstrated leadership, progress towards the applicant’s business degree, outside responsibilities, and communication skills

Pat & Mary Kay Jones Scholarship

  • Undergraduate freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior or transfer
  • Minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 (entering freshmen eligibility based on athletic eligibility requirements which include 2 of the following: minimum ACT score of 18, high school GPA of 2.0 or higher, and/or class rank in upper half of graduating class)
  • Preference given to Ward County resident
  • Financial need as determined by FAFSA or a like determination
  • If the recipient is a senior with one semester left, the value of the scholarship will be halved.

Pearl Stusrud Memorial Scholarship

  • Accounting major
  • 3.5 GPA in major and 3.0 GPA overall
  • Full-time sophomore, junior, or senior in the year award received
  • A degree student with special status may be considered
  • The following factors will be used in the selection process:
    • Academic Performance
    • Demonstrated leadership potential
    • Extracurricular activities and responsibilities

Peoples State Bank Scholarship

  • Preference to employee of Peoples State Bank
  • Preference to applicant from Minot/Velva region
  • 2.5 minimum GPA
  • Financial need

R.D. Koppenhaver Award

  • Student plans to sit for the CPA Exam within the following 12 months
  • Enrolled at a state or border city college
  • Does not have exam reimbursement from employer
  • Based on scholastic ability plus extra-curricular activity

Dr. Richard Schlapman Scholarship

  • Preference given to a Finance major
  • Undergraduate Sophomore, Junior, or Senior
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • If the recipient is a senior with one semester left, the value of the scholarship will be halved.

Robert and Ilze Sando Scholarship

  • Preference given to a Business Education major
  • Preference also to a student-athlete in one of MSU’s NCAA teams
  • Preferred cumulative grade point average of 2.5
  • Undergraduate student (entering Freshmen must meet athletic eligibility requirements since they have no established college GPA)
  • If the recipient is a senior with one semester left, the value of the scholarship will be halved.

Robert Torgerson Scholarship

  • Full time MSU student in the College of Business

Roger Looyenga Leadership Development Scholarship

  • To be eligible for this scholarship, students are nominated by faculty or professional advisor as a candidate for the program.  

Roger Mergenthal Scholarship

  • Undergraduate sophomore, junior, or senior
  • Business education major
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • If the recipient(s) is a student attending only one semester out of an academic year, the value of the scholarship shall be halved.

Severson Entrepreneurship Scholarship

  • Recipient must demonstrate he/she is a committed or active Entrepreneurship Club member
  • Preference is given to a Minot State University junior or rising senior
  • A 3.0 GPA is preferred
  • Recipient should demonstrate a well- balanced approach to studies and outside activities, including student and/or civic organizations, university athletics, and/or work
  • Previous involvement in Entrepreneurship Club will be a strong factor
  • An essay describing
    • (a) future goals and plans for the next 5-10 years,
    • (b) importance of college education,
    • (c) what "giving back" means to you, now and in your future career, and
    • (d) a description of your personal interest in entrepreneurship.

Wells Fargo Scholarship

  • Students who are finance majors or demonstrate an interest in finance

Yvonne Schultz Scholarship

  • Undergraduate Freshman, Sophomore, Junior or Senior
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0

Note: Students are advised to also apply for scholarships awarded by the Financial Aid Office (applications can be found on the Financial Aid Office web site). In addition, the Alumni Association offers scholarships for which there are special criteria and a separate application form available at their web site.

How to apply
The 2018-2019 MSU SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION is now available. The scholarship deadline is February 15, 2018.
