Onward: An interview with Joey Dixon

MINOT, N.D. – Joey Dixon is a nursing major at Minot State University with a minor in psychology. Having lived in various parts of the country throughout his life, he considers Monument, Colorado, his home.

Dixon’s dedication shines through his achievements, including earning a spot on the President’s List and gaining valuable experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).

University Communications caught up with Dixon to explore his journey, why he chose nursing, and what drew him to Minot State.

What brought you to Minot?
JD: My father's job was in the Air Force; he was stationed here when I was about 19. They (my parents) heavily encouraged me to go to college and further my education. Especially with Minot State, which is close to them, where I could gain a quality education at an affordable price.

What are some of the reasons you chose to come to Minot State and start the nursing program?
JD: I chose Minot State for the location and time of my life and made it the most feasible option for my circumstances. I started as a general studies major, which did not align with my goals. I then changed to psychology, and from there, I decided that I wanted to be a nurse practitioner, which meant changing my major to nursing.

Do you have a highlight from your time at Minot State?
JD: One of my favorite memories and accomplishments while here at MSU was getting into the nursing program and being a President Honor Roll student on many occasions, all reflecting my ability to thrive academically with support from faculty, staff, and peers.

What does your future look like to you right now?
JD: I plan to continue my bachelor's in nursing, then work in critical care as a nurse for two years before returning to school to become a nurse practitioner.

Tell us about yourself and how your experiences have shaped you and led you to the path that you are on.
JD: In the past, I had struggled with substance abuse, so being able to see a future for myself gives me much-needed comfort. Being given an environment that fostered success has given me the opportunity to see all the possibilities ahead of me. I would not have been able to do that without being able to start over, which Minot State University gave me a fresh start.

What do you like to do outside of the classroom: family, hobbies, or other areas of interest?
JD: I like to hang out with friends, dabble in video games, or shop around town. I specifically really enjoy collecting rocks or crystals as well.
