Faul interns at ADM

MINOT, N.D. – Taryn Faul is now the grain merchandising and origination intern at the ADM Velva plant.

From Max, she is a Minot State senior, double majoring in finance and marketing. Faul started her internship at Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) July 1. The challenges and experiences of the job enabled her to consider a career in the agriculture industry.

Founded in 1902, ADM is an American multinational food processing and commodities trading corporation. It is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. Faul met with Randy Conway, director of Severson Entrepreneurship Academy, to discuss potential internships. They talked about ADM as a good fit for Faul, so she reached out to the Velva plant manager in April 2022.

For the internship, ADM flew Faul out to Decatur, Illinois. While there for the internship orientation, she and other 117 interns there toured the Decatur plant.

“We spent a week in Decatur, learning all about ADM, touring the local plant, and visiting the office building,” Faul said. “The office in Decatur is ADM’s North American headquarters, so there are many people to meet and departments to learn about.”

At the start of the internship, Faul found that many of the materials she covered in her marketing and finance classes transferred over and helped her accommodate to the demands of the position.

“It’s really fun to apply what you learn in your classes to real-world situations,” she said. “I had a lot of the base knowledge that I needed for the job from those classes going into it. As for the specifics, those I learned on the job.”

Faul speaks with farmers to contract canola seed purchases that will then be crushed at the plant. Some of the risks that they face and manage in the office after purchasing seed involve currency exchange and the canola futures market.

“Prior to joining ADM, I had no experience in the agriculture industry. I had only worked in the banking industry, so it was definitely a change of pace,” she said. “I learned so much throughout the internship, like the terminology used when contracting seed purchases and how bids are coordinated.”

Faul also had some highlights from the first month. For example, she visited the ADM Minneapolis office.

“When visiting the office, I was able to sit down with every department to see what they do on a day-to-day basis along with what their individual roles are within the organization. It was also great to meet some of the people that our office collaborates with on a regular basis.”

With these new learning experiences, Faul hopes to finish her undergraduate courses at Minot State in the fall. Afterward, she aims to earn her Master of Science in Management from the University as well, while maintaining a part-time position at ADM.
