Student Leader Summit at Minot State

MINOT, N.D. – As the current school year draws to a close, students will be preparing for next year at a Student Leadership Summit Saturday, April 30 on Minot State’s campus.

“The summit was developed last year by several offices who had all been training students separately. We wanted to try a little synergy of getting all our student leaders together knowing that they could learn just as much from each other as they could from us,” said Jim Sturm, Looyenga Leadership Center director. “So this program brings together students who will be in leadership positions in the fall — Student Government Association, resident assistants, peer mentors, MSU Life, and more — for a day of training on topics we all used to cover separately.”

Following breakfast, the event will kick off with a keynote, Today’s Forecast: 100% Chance of Fun, presented by Aaron Hughes, student activities coordinator, and Payton Bland, past MSU Life director. The rest of the day is comprised of break-out workshops, individual and group strength assessments, and team building.

“Students don’t need a title, position, or badge to make an impact,” said Hughes. “When it comes to authentic leadership, you’re either a thermostat or a thermometer — you can simply react to the atmosphere around you, or you can set it. It’s my hope that our student leaders leave knowing that the energy we all bring into a space matters and truly does make an impact on their clubs, meetings, and personal relationships.”

The day is led by several University staff and students with sessions aimed at building leadership and insight.

“Our goal is to help students understand their leadership roles and the expectations of their positions and prepare them to help build a positive community at Minot State so that all of our students have the most impactful experience possible,” said Sturm. “It also allows these student leaders to start thinking about what they might like to accomplish and to network with one another.”
