Hometown Pride Scholarship deadline at end of March

MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University’s inaugural Hometown Pride Scholarship application deadline for Fall 2022 is March 31.

The $1,000 Hometown Pride Scholarship is Minot State’s way of giving back to students from communities in 15 counties in Northwest North Dakota who have supported the University for more than 100 years. This scholarship empowers local high school seniors to shape their future through a memorable experience at Minot State University.

“We are honored when any student chooses Minot State University, but when a student from Minot or one of our surrounding local communities decides to make us their home away from home, we feel especially grateful,” said Michelle Sayler, Minot State’s director of enrollment services. “MSU is committed to connect with our local and regional community and the Hometown Pride Scholarship is one of those ways we are saying thank you to those communities who have supported us throughout the years.

While MSU’s general scholarship deadline was the middle of February, the Hometown Pride Scholarship is a separate incentive for area students and does not require the standard form. If students submit all required materials by March 31 and meet the eligibility standards including a 2.75 unweighted GPA or higher on official high school transcripts and meet the North Dakota University System core requirements, the student will receive the additional $1,000.

In conjunction with the Hometown Pride Scholarship for first-year freshman, MSU is planning an opportunity for incoming transfer students from the same Northwest North Dakota region. MSU’s “First Class Free” promotion will launch April 1 for the Fall 2022 semester for students transferring from any four-year or two-year institution.

Minot State will cover the tuition (institutional and state fees are not covered) for three credits for full-time (minimum of 12 credits) transfer students for individuals who originally graduated from a high school in the 15 counties making up the Hometown Pride Scholarship region.

“Welcoming students back to Minot State who may have started elsewhere is a priority of ours,” said Cole Krueger, Minot State’s director of marketing. “We know they are proud of where they came from so this upcoming transfer student promotion is just for them, students who graduated from high schools within our hometown pride region.”

Officials at Minot State have already seen a boost in applications due to the scholarship and are cautiously optimistic about Fall 2022. MSU is excited to report a total of 321 Hometown Pride Scholarship applications have received as of March 4, compared to 244 applications from the same 15-county region a year ago.

“It brings us tremendous joy to have so many students planning to attend from right here in our backyard, the Hometown Pride region,” Kruger said.

The University is reporting a significant increase in total applications for Fall 2022 with 1,223 in total. With just over five months until the start of the Fall 2022 semester, Minot State has outpaced the past four year’s application numbers to-date, including just over 150 more than pre-COVID season of 2018. Overall, MSU has 408 more total applications compared to the same time in 2021.

Minot State annual Red & Green Day open house last month hosted 40 students, nearly the total of the last three year’s Red & Green Days combined (51).
