MINOT, N.D. — Senior business management major Shad Hemmer discovered his ideal career after looking to gain work experience before graduation.

Having always loved baseball, Hemmer searched throughout the Midwest for teams with summer internships to build his resume.

The Souris Valley Sabre Dogs fit him best.

“I haven’t ever really done anything like this before, and it was a whole new learning experience,” he said. “I had to learn how to set up our point of sale system for our concessions, beer kiosk, and merchandise, and with never having done that before, it was a challenge.”

Hemmer got to use his point of sale system on a regular basis when he would manage the games at Corbett Field.

“Typically, me and the other ballpark operations interns get to Corbett about four hours before the game, and I make sure all the iPads and credit card scanners are fully charged for the beer and merchandise kiosks,” he said. “Then I usually go start setting up the beer and merchandise kiosks, making sure the coolers are full of beer and have ice on them to make sure they are cold. During the game, I typically go around making sure the Kiosks are running well and if they need any more beer or money.”

On top of running the sales, Hemmer made sure both the Sabre Dogs and their opposing teams were taken care of throughout the games.

“When the players start showing up, I have to make sure that their water coolers are full and have ice in them,” Hemmer said. “I also check the waters for both teams during the game and make sure they have enough, especially lately with how hot it has been.”

Then he starts his post-game tasks.

“Around the seventh inning, I usually have to leave and go pick up the post-game meal for both teams and get it all set up and make sure both teams have right amount of food,” said Hemmer. “When the game is finished, I just make sure everything goes well with the meal for both teams, and then when they are done eating, I make sure that everything is cleaned up.”

Throughout his time with the Sabre Dogs, not only did Hemmer meet and become close to his coworkers and the players on the team, but he also discovered what he wants to for his career.

“It’s been a lot of fun. I enjoy the people I work with, and they help make it a fun environment,” he said. “I love what I’m doing, and it has shown me that this is what I want to do in my life. My hope is to work for a sports team of some sort, in the front office or within stadium operations. I would love to work in baseball or football since they are the two sports I have loved the most my whole life.”
