English Club hosts new murder mystery event

MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State University English Club will host their first ever All-Hallows Writing Convention murder mystery event on Saturday, Nov. 2 in Hartnett Hall. The interactive shows begin in Aleshire Theater at 6, 7, and 8 p.m. and are open to students, staff, faculty, and Minot community members.

Members of the English Club have written the original murder mystery story featuring multiple horror writers like J. R. R. Tolkien, William Shakespeare, and Ernest Hemingway. Club member Jacqueline Schlecht, an English education major at Minot State, is one of the authors of the event.

“We compiled all of our favorite horror authors and then put how we wanted them to interact with each other and went from there,” she said. “Expect to use your brain, first of all, and then try to figure out how these famous authors are dying. To quote Julie Chen from Big Brother, ‘Expect the unexpected.’”

The All-Hallows Writing Convention murder mystery runs in conjunction with the Campus and Community Dialogue “Ghosts and the Paranormal: Real or Fantasy?” in which Wendy Kimble, former Minot State art professor and lead investigator of Paranormal Investigators of North Dakota, will discuss her experience spending the night in Hartnett Hall, the venue of the murder mystery.

On top of hosting the event, the English Club upholds an artistic presence on campus, according to assistant English professor and advisor of the English Club Sarah Aleshire

“It’s really a place for students to celebrate English as a language art,” she said. “We often think about it as a skill, but there’s artistry to the creation and the reading and taking in the literature that we don’t want to forget about. The English Club is a good place to do that and to promote appreciation of text, both writing and literature, throughout our community and the broader community as well.”

The murder mystery admission is $5 or $3 for groups of five or more, and all proceeds will support the English Club.
