Minot State Division of Music presents ‘When I Am Gone’

The Minot State University Singers and Concert Choir will present “When I am Gone,” an a cappella tribute of prayers for the victims of Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas, on Friday, Nov. 15 beginning at 7:30 p.m. at The Depot in downtown Minot. The event is free and open to the public, where donations will benefit The National Association of the Bahamas.

Emerson Eads, Minot State director of choral activities and assistant professor of music, believes in highlighting social causes through music. Past performances have included a veterans concert, passion concert for missing and murdered indigenous women and girls, and a celebration of the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage.

A student contacted Eads with Friday’s performance idea.

“I was approached by one of our tenors, Antonio Franco Fernandez, who arrived this spring from Puerto Rico. He felt burdened to help out the inhabitants of the Bahamas who were victims of Hurricane Dorian, since he had lived through Hurricane Maria’s devastation of his own island,” Eads said. “I knew this had to be a separate concert dedicated to this very heartfelt and personal desire to put our talents and arts at the service of humanity.”

The event will take place at The Depot, located at 15 North Main, Minot.

“This past summer I investigated Minot for spaces that were kind to the voice, acoustics that carry the voice, rather than absorb it,” Eads said about his search for an off-campus venue. “I also eyed the downtown train depot, which wasn’t open at the time. I contacted Jessica Ackerman who not only opened the place up for me and the Minot Chamber Chorale, but she also offered their amazing space to the MSU choirs. This space is quintessentially Minot and provides a space that is delicious for the voice. These places are rare to find.”

The University Singers is comprised of 17 students who want to create a more intimate music-making experience than what the Concert Choir offers. They will perform several songs before being joined by the Concert Choir.
