ALUM FROM DAY 1: Faculty Sarah Aleshire '04

Alum from Day 1: Sarah Aleshire '04, Minot, N.D., Faculty, English

Sarah returned to her alma mater in 2007. She has been in her current position as Assistant Professor of English since 2009 and coordinates the Gender/Women’s Studies program. When she isn’t teaching, she likes to be involved with the local music scene, complete with a studio in the basement of her house.

Why did you choose Minot State?
Originally I was interested in pre-med, but it just didn’t feel right.  On my campus visit, I met (then professor) Conrad Davidson and we had a conversation about the English department. Immediately, I felt like that was a community. It matched what I wanted in a university.

How has Minot State helped you further your academic career?
I went to grad school (Washington State) with students from all over the world and I felt I was competitive. Getting to know the professors here gave me more opportunities —  I presented at conferences and had some publications already under my belt.

What is your favorite quote?
One of my favorites — and I have a lot of them — is, “What saves a (person) is to take a step. Then another step.”  — Wind, Sand and Stars by Antoine de Saint-Exupery

What has been your favorite class?
My favorite class I took and now teach is literary criticism. It deals with big ideas. That’s what drew me to English.

What is the best kept secret about Minot State?
You can immediately sit down and talk to anyone at any level, at any time -— although after being here now, it doesn’t feel like a secret.

Alum from Day 1 is a special section that appears in each issue of the Alumni Association and Development Foundation Connections Magazine. Connections features one student from each class and an outstanding faculty/staff member who graduated from Minot State. To view the entire Fall 2018 Connections Magazine online, please click HERE.
