MINOT, N.D. – For Minot State University associate professor Dean Frantsvog, passion equals success.

“I’m busy, but the upside of that is I do very few things that I don’t love to do,” said Frantsvog. “I choose projects that I’m passionate about. I teach because I love it and I enjoy it. I enjoy coming to work every day. I love the law. I love the teaching aspect of what I do.”

This love and passion led to the Minot State Student Government Association (SGA) presenting Frantsvog with the Professor of the Year in Business award at the end of the 2017-2018 school year.

“I was honored to receive the award. I’ve worked at Minot State now for 14 years and I’m glad that my passion for teaching shows every day. I try to bring that passion out in the students,” Franstvog said.

Frantsvog is a lawyer by trade and believes bringing the real world to the classroom offers his students a unique opportunity.

“I try to show them how the law is going to affect them on a day-to-day basis in both their personal and professional lives,” he said. “I don’t think they get a lawyer’s perspective anywhere else on campus.”

To keep his license current, Frantsvog takes 45 hours of continuing education every year. He takes classes that benefit him as an educator and transition well into the classroom.

“I try to keep up on different and emerging topics that are going on right now. Things have changed a lot, even since our new administration. So it’s interesting and fun to keep up on everything,” he added.

Beyond teaching an array of accounting and finance courses, Frantsvog has also served as adjunct instructor in the criminal justice department and is the Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) for the university. In January, Minot State Athletics opened the Frantsvog Academic Success Center to honor its only NCAA Division II FAR. He continues to focus on small business, financial, and regulatory matters as legal consultant and, at one time, was the youngest council member ever elected to the City of Minot council.

“Young people today, more so than ever before, have opinions on the way things should be. But having an opinion and doing nothing about it doesn’t get you anywhere,” Frantsvog said. “So, you have to take it to the next level which is to do something about it. That was my attitude when I ran for council many years ago.

“I can have these opinions on the way I think things should be, but nobody is going to sit and listen to me unless I choose to get involved one way or another. Getting involved is important for our young people today because the world is changing so much.”
