MSU offers flexible education for Minot Air Force Base

“Many airmen prefer a face-to-face experience as opposed to taking a class online, even though they have work schedules that preclude their attending classes on a consistent schedule.”

MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. – Minot State has been offering classes on the Minot airbase for 57 years. Now, MSU is expanding opportunities for airmen by offering a convenient educational format known as flexible course delivery.

This new format is a combination of an online class and a face-to-face class that allows active duty personnel to balance their temporary duty assignments while keeping up with class assignments. The flexible course delivery schedule is 16 weeks. Instructors teach the same class two nights a week, and students are required to attend one of them.

On the days they cannot attend, airmen log into Blackboard and complete missed assignments online. The Blackboard support shell is set up so that weekly assignments and support materials are found online.

"Many airmen prefer a face-to-face experience as opposed to taking a class online, even though they have work schedules that preclude their attending classes on a consistent schedule,” said Minot State professor Kristin Warmoth.

Warmoth began teaching fundamentals of public speaking in a flexible delivery format in January 2018, and started a second term course on March 5.

“A lot of airmen don’t know about the flex delivery course format yet,” said MSU at MAFB program coordinator Brigitte Mikula.

In addition to the flexible course delivery, MSU offers squadron classes. Squadron classes are designed around the schedule of a particular squadron on the base.

“These classes are growing in popularity and MSU is seen as the primary provider of squadron classes on the Minot Air Force Base,” said Warmoth.
