Virginia Geesaman Chamber Music Internship Program for strings and piano
The Geesaman Internship was started in the 2022-23 academic year with the Thalo Trio (piano, violin, clarinet, pictured above). Recordings of their playing: their full recital and their final performance/public discussion of the experience.
Individuals are selected annually by audition to form the Geesaman Internship ensemble. The group is coached weekly by members of Luminus, the faculty piano trio at Minot State University, and will work at least four times per semester with members of Beo, a professional string quartet based in Pittsburgh, PA. The ensemble is expected to work with their coaches to develop programming appropriate for formal recitals, outreach concerts, competitions, and other endeavors suited to their goals and interests. To conclude the academic year, the ensemble will participate in Dakota Chamber Music, typically in early to mid-June, working on their own material and giving at least one presentation.
Benefits of being in the ensemble:
- $1000 per member annual scholarship, additional to other music and academic awards
- Initial budget of $2000 per year for travel, music, and equipment. Additional funds available through fund-raising, concert revenue, grants, and both on and off-campus resources.
- Working relationship with a professional chamber ensemble, on topics such as developing a professional identity, marketing strategies, technology, and other aspects of musicianship and entrepreneurism. The ensemble will work with Beo a minimum of four times per semester, including at least one in-person visit, and then for a week at DCM each June.
The ensemble will have access to:
- Baroque instruments, including 2 violins, viola, cello, 5-string cello, viola da gamba, and two harpsichords.
- Electric and amplified instruments, including a 5-string violin, violin, viola, 5-string cello, and upright bass.
- Tablets with stands and pedals
- Professional quality audio and video production equipment and software
Responsibilities/Expectations
- 4 hours per week minimum rehearsal time
- 1 hour per week minimum coached rehearsal time
- Coordinate with members of Beo for 4 rehearsal sessions per semester
- Working with members of Luminus, present outreach programs to at least 4 public school classrooms per semester
- Present at least one public concert per year at a community venue other than a school
- Present at least one full recital per year at Minot State University
- Participate in the annual MTNA Chamber Music competition
- Register for MUSC 144 Chamber Ensembles each semester
Application
- Apply to Minot State University with a major or minor in music; preference given to majors
- Complete the music scholarship audition process, including a live or video-recorded audition and interview.
- Complete the following, specific to the Geesaman Internship
- An essay of approximately 250 words addressing your interest, qualifications, and what goals you are most excited to work toward if selected.
- A chamber music repertoire list of all works rehearsed and performed
- A list of chamber music experience, whether part of a summer program, school, or other.
- Submit in digital form to music@minotstateu.edu
- Following your general scholarship audition, an additional interview would be scheduled to discuss the Internship.
- Continued participation in subsequent years will be determined through annual evaluation
