Keyboard Arts Festival

Welcome to the Inaugural Minot State University Keyboard Arts Festival!

Organ and piano students, teachers, and enthusiasts are invited to partake in a weekend of concerts, competitions, and masterclasses in the beautiful concert spaces at MSU.

Friday, October 25

  • 4:30 p.m. Organ Masterclass with Dr. Beverly Everett (Ann Nicole Nelson Hall)
  • 7:30 p.m. Organ Recital: Dr. Beverly Everett, guest organist (Ann Nicole Nelson Hall)

Saturday, October 26

  • 9:00 a.m. Student Competitions (Hartnett Recital Hall)
  • TBA Attend MSO rehearsal with guest, Oda Voltersvik (Ann Nicole Nelson Hall)
  • 1:00 p.m. Piano Masterclass with Dr. Dianna Anderson (Hartnett Recital Hall)
  • 2:30 p.m. Student showcase concert featuring competition winners (Hartnett Recital Hall)
  • 7:00 p.m. Minot Symphony Orchestra concert (tickets provided to first 25 student attendees registered)

Sunday, October 27

  • 11:00 a.m. Minot State University keyboard studio showcase (Ann Nicole Nelson Hall)
  • 1:30 p.m. Oda Voltersvik concert “Nordic Women Composers” (Hartnett Recital Hall)

All events are free to attend, however an entry fee will be collected for competition entries to cover the cost of judges. Students interested in performing in the organ or piano masterclasses should request by October 12.

Student Piano Competitions Information

Age Categories:

  • Elementary- Age 9-12
  • Junior- Age 13-15
  • Senior- Age 16-18, not enrolled in college
  • College Undergraduate, enrolled in music major
  • College Graduate, enrolled in music major
  • Adult Amateur, must be studying with a teacher, but not already have or be in pursuit of a music major

Each entrant will have the option to compete in any of the following style categories:

  • Renaissance and Baroque - Composed before 1750
  • Classical- 1750-1830
  • Romantic- 1820-1900
  • Modern- 1890-1960
  • Contemporary- 1950-2024

A student may perform only one selection in each category. Multi-movement works are acceptable as long as the combined time does not exceed 12 minutes. Concerti are not allowed. Works using prepared piano or extended techniques involving the inside of the piano, playing the keys with anything other than hands, etc. are not allowed. Arrangements and transcriptions are allowed. Memorization is required for all categories except Adult Amateur. Performers must have a legal, bound, paper score to present to the judge. The judge will hear complete performances of all repertoire. Address any questions of categorization of repertoire with Dr. Dianna Anderson.

Entry fees: $10/category

Students will receive written comments from the judge. No ratings will be given. The judge will name a winner and runner-up in each category. The winner from each category will perform in an honors recital Saturday afternoon. Winners of more than two categories have the option of deferring to the runner-up in any category. All participants will receive a digital certificate.
