Dr. Jon Rumney, Professor of Music, teaches Violin, Viola, Chamber Music, Music History, Strings Methods and is Co-director of the MSU String Ensemble. He is Concertmaster of the Minot Symphony Orchestra, and has frequently been a featured soloist with that ensemble as well as with the Missouri Valley Chamber Orchestra (Bismarck, ND). He has been Artistic Director of Dakota Chamber Music since its inception in 1996 until 2005; DCM is a nationally recognized summer institute for strings, woodwinds, brass and piano, and winner of the North Dakota String Teachers Association Distinguished Service Award (2002). As a founding member of the Montani String Quartet (Charleston, WV), Rumney appeared twice on National Public Radio’s Performance Today and attended the Center for Advanced Quartet Studies at Aspen, CO.

Dr. Rumney received his bachelor, master, and doctor of musical arts degrees from the Eastman School of Music (Rochester, NY). He has studied chamber music with members of the Juilliard, Guarneri, Cleveland, Emerson, Tokyo, and American String Quartets. Rumney has taught at Roberts Wesleyan College (Rochester, NY), Kinhaven Music School (Weston, VT), Interlochen Arts Camp (Interlochen, MI), and the International Music Camp (Dunseith, ND).

Dr. Rumney’s students have won numerous awards, including first prize at state American String Teachers Association Solo competitions, and fellowships to summer programs such as the Blossom Music Festival (OH), the National Orchestral Institute (MD), and the Brevard Music Festival (NC). His former students have found teaching position nationwide, in every school system in the state of ND with a string program; some have continued their studies at schools such as Juilliard, Eastman, the Cleveland Institute and the Cincinnati College-Conservatory.
