The North Dakota Department of Transportation deems the following individuals eligible for the Driver License Online Course:

    1. Individuals, no matter what age, who are completing an approved North Dakota Commercial Driving School road test waiver program.

This includes individuals who are initially taking their Driver Education course, which includes this online course, and a course for the behind the wheel portion with a commercial driving school.

The following link provides a list of Commercial Driving Schools from the North Dakota Department of Transportation website:

Individuals will receive certificates upon completing each course. The certificate received from the Commercial Driving School needs to be the WAIVER certificate. The certificates from each course can be brought to a local DOT office upon holding the permit for the required amount of time. The individual will be issued their driver’s license and allowed to waive the driving test. No appointment necessary.

    2. Individuals under the age of 18 who have had their driver’s license cancelled by the North Dakota Department of Transportation.

Two options are available for obtaining another driver’s license:

Option 1:
If the individual desires to obtain another driver’s license before their 18th birthday, the individual must:

  • Pass a permit test and hold the permit for the required amount of time.
  • Complete an approved driver education course, which includes this course.
  • Log 30 hours of driving time with a parent or guardian. Any driving time that has taken place since the individual has gained their permit back can be logged using the following log sheet:
» Print driving log with instructions

Once the driver education course is complete, certificates will be mailed to the individual which will provide blank driving logs on the back of each certificate. Please transfer the logged driving time to the back of the certificate that will be turned into the local DOT office.
  • Pass the road test. The road test cannot be scheduled until after the completion certificates have been received for the driver education course. Please schedule an appointment with a local DOT office for the road test using the following contact information:
    » Driver's License Sites.
Option 2:
The individual may also choose to:

  • Pass a permit test.
  • Wait until he/she reaches age 18.
  • Schedule and pass a road test.
All individuals have four (4) months from the registration date to complete the course activities. All tests must be passed with an 80% pass rate. The individuals are allowed multiple attempts to achieve the 80% rate.
