Minot State to feature two days at 2024 NoDAKoN
MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University Department of Business, Math, and Technology faculty and students, the MSU SWIFT Club, and the Computer Science Club have announced a two-day NoDAKoN scheduled for Oct. 16-17.
The cybersecurity-themed event is in its fourth year and will feature the SRT Tech Day on Oct. 16 and Cybersecurity Summit — Cyber Safety: Protecting Yourself from Online Threats on Oct. 17.
SRT Tech Day is an annual event showcasing area secondary business students as they compete in various business and technology-related competitions. The event returned last year after a break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with 2024 being the 24th year of the event.
Area schools scheduled to participate include Bethold, Bottineau, Bowbells, Burke Central, Des Lacs-Burlington, Drake-Anamoose, Our Redeemer’s Christian School, Nedrose, Powers Lake, South Prairie, Stanley, Surrey, TGU-Granville, TGU-Towner, and Tioga. Along with competitive events, students will attend break-out sessions on data analytics, cybersecurity, Esports, and employment skills.
“We are so excited to welcome over 100 students and instructors to campus for a day filled with competitive events and breakout sessions,” said Jan Repnow, MSU assistant professor in the Department of Business and SRT Tech Day coordinator. “SRT Tech Day will also include cybersecurity and data analytics to coincide with the campus NoDAKoN event. We are grateful to SRT for sponsoring this event.”
Competitions are set for the morning of Oct. 16 at the Minot State Student Center Conference Center.
The community is invited to attend free sessions during the First Western Bank & Trust Cybersecurity Summit on Oct. 17. The summit begins in the MSU Student Center Conference Center at 10 a.m. with a brief welcome and three guest speakers. Darrik Trudell ’03, a Minot State graduate and resident agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations, will speak about online predators and safety; Jacob Rued, from First Western Bank & Trust, will address financial threats and crimes; and NDIT’s Tom Orluck, senior cyber security risk analyst, and Jaden Evanger, senior cybersecurity automation engineer, will present on professional and personal advice related to risk management.
There will be a free lunch and networking event at 12 p.m. Registration is required for the free lunch and can be accessed HERE. Jennifer Sackett, business applications and data director for Connexus Energy, will be featured as the keynote speaker, sponsored by the Minot State University Cultural and Intellectual Engagement Council, at 12:15 p.m., delivering an address on protecting our infrastructure.
The afternoon sessions will feature a roundtable discussion and workshop. At 1:15 p.m., Sackett and Rued will be joined by moderator Anthony Auckland, Jesse Clark, a tech entrepreneur; Chris Gergen from NDIT; and Jersey Kelly ’20, a Minot State grad who works for SRT, in the roundtable discussion focusing on cybersecurity and asset protection. Clark will then lead a workshop called “Code Review to Exploitation” in Model Hall at 2:15 p.m.
