Dr. Ethan Valentine received his Ph.D. in Psychological & Quantitative Foundations from the University of Iowa, with emphasis in educational psychology and the learning sciences. His experience includes work in medical and educational research, learning design, and teaching.
At Minot State, Dr. Valentine leads the Digital Cognition Lab. The lab’s current research focuses on how individuals interact with and learn from digital tools in informal learning environments, including games, simulations, and mixed reality applications. This work includes the examination of user choice in open learning settings, the design of game- and simulation-based learning to facilitate mental model formation of complex systems, and the use of augmented and virtual reality to enhance learning. Dr. Valentine's interests also include the impact of digital communities, such as those surrounding esports, on the development of 21st century skills. In addition to his faculty role, Dr. Valentine serves as the Director of Minot State Esports, facilitating competitive opportunities and designing academic programming tied to gaming and esports.
