MSU students Sakar, Hoogensen join Eckmann for international study tour

By Michael Linnell
University Communications Director

MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University’s Terry (Ferebee) Eckmann ’81/’82, a professor in teacher education and kinesiology, has been enriching the student experience for select MSU students in the international study tour program.

This past fall semester, Minot State students Alexa Munoz Sakar and Mallory Hoogensen joined Eckmann at Secrets Resort in La Romana, Dominican Republic, for this elite educational experience.

The duo assisted with daily yoga for 10 to 30 participants, teaching on the beach Monday through Thursday, provided two fitness classes each day, and led HIIT classes on Saturdays.

“Mallory and Alexa proudly represented Minot State University during their recent professional experience at Secrets Resort,” Eckmann said. “Throughout their stay, they delivered safe, effective, and engaging fitness classes to guests from around the world —including England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, France, Portugal, Italy, Peru, Argentina, Chile, Canada, and the United States.

“Both resort guests and members of the entertainment team praised Mallory and Alexa for their energy, expertise, and positive impact.”

Sakar and Hoogensen were a part of the resort’s entertainment team. Both students helped model yoga poses and assisted with a fitness challenge and stretch on Fridays, with around 20 participants. Sakar assisted Spanish-speaking guests as a translator.

“This was a great experience to share our passion for fitness with people from different fitness levels, ages, ethnic backgrounds, and countries,” said Sakar.

“A phenomenal experience to use my knowledge from courses at Minot State to teach a diverse population,” added Hoogensen.

Along with fitness class duties, the pair was also responsible for marketing the events to engage resort guests.

“Their outstanding performance created a memorable and meaningful experience for everyone involved, showcasing Minot State University on an international stage,” Eckmann said.

Minot State is the only university that partners with FitBodies to provide this hands-on opportunity.
