From the mat to the market: Wrestler takes on the journey of finance

Daniels Bendiks is an international student from Riga, Latvia. Double majoring in finance and accounting, he keeps busy but finds time for his passion, wrestling. Last year, the Minot State men’s wrestling team placed 11th in the world.

“Wrestling was the main reason I came here. There was another Latvian guy who came here, and I decided that I wanted to study in the USA,” Bendiks said. “I asked where he studied, and he gave me the email and told me to reach out to coach Forde.”

Although coming to the U.S. for wrestling was a big step for Bendiks, he wasn’t worried about getting too homesick.

“The first time I went to a training camp showed me that I can live far from home and still perform,” Bendiks said. “I won't get as homesick so quickly; it made me lose my fear of traveling the world.”

However, even though he wasn’t scared of being away from home, there were other concerns. But thankfully, after a short time, his fears were eased.

“I was worried I would just be another student when I came here,” Bendiks said. “All the advisors know you by your name, you can have private conversations with the professors, the classrooms are small, you can talk with them and ask the dumb questions, you don't have to be afraid.”

Bendiks also found enjoyment throughout his classes, with a surplus of hands-on opportunities provided by professors that allowed him to dive into real-world experiences, leaving a lasting impression.

“All the professors are knowledgeable in their field. I’m in professor Stai’s classes, and he offered me the opportunity to sit in on a board meeting. So, that was impressive,” he said. “It was my first time sitting at a board meeting, and it was intimidating but fun.”

In addition to academics, Bendiks has found that smaller communities, like the finance club and leadership programs, offer plenty of opportunities to grow and make meaningful connections.

For Bendiks, taking risks and stepping out of his comfort zone has been the key to his success, and he encourages others to take that leap as well.

“Don't be scared, don't be intimidated, just go for it,” Bendiks said. “What is the worst that can happen? If you don't like it, you can always go back home, but what other time can you take such big risks?”

Despite the uncertainty about his future, Bendiks remains open to possibilities, weighing the choice between starting his own business or pursuing a career in banking. Whichever direction Bendiks takes, the decision will undoubtedly shape an exciting and transformative chapter ahead.

“Right now, it's still a big question mark,” Bendiks said. “I am still kind of deciding if I want to go towards starting my own business and move towards that side or try to work in banking. So, time will show.”
