Minot State to host Indigenous Peoples’ Day Intertribal Powwow

By Veronica Corey
Communications and Marketing Specialist

MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State Native American Cultural Center and Club and the Minot State University Diversity Council are hosting an Indigenous Peoples’ Day Intertribal Powwow on Monday, Oct. 14, from 4-8 p.m. in the Hartnett Hall Collaboration Space, located south of the Minot State Dome.

In 2020, the City of Minot signed a proclamation recognizing the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples' Day, celebrating and honoring Indigenous People.

“In 2019, Minot State University Native American Club students held information panels and met with MSU faculty, staff, and students about recognizing the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples’ Day,” said Annette Mennem, Minot State Native American Center director. “In Spring 2020, a resolution was prepared by the students to request the City of Minot to recognize this day as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. On Oct. 5, 2020, then Mayor Shaun Sipma signed the proclamation, and since that day, the University celebrates and honors Indigenous People.”

The powwow will be emceed by Tim Counts Greatwalker and feature Slough Foot as the Host Drum. This event is a non-contest powwow and is free and open to the public.

For more information, visit the Facebook EVENT.

This event is sponsored by the MSU Diversity Council, Native American Cultural Center, and MSU Native American Club.
