Uhrmacher, McConnel to present at Minot State

By Michael Linnell
University Communications Director

MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University is excited to welcome Bruce Uhrmacher from the University of Denver and Christy McConnell from the University of Northern Colorado to present a special lecture titled "Crafting Purposeful Teaching: Aesthetic and Ecological Perspectives."

This engaging presentation will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 24, from 5-6 p.m. at the Minot State University Student Center.

“I am thrilled to bring Drs. Bruce Uhrmacher and Christy McConnell to Minot State University and to introduce them to educators in the Minot area. Both Bruce and Christy have profoundly influenced my own approach to teaching and learning,” said Dan Conn, Minot State associate professor and chair of the Department of Education and Inclusive Services. “As Christy's graduate assistant and dissertation advisee, I learned invaluable lessons about the deep connections between aesthetics, ecological relationships, and learning environments. Bruce, who served as Christy's dissertation chair, was, in turn, advised by the renowned Dr. Elliot Eisner of Stanford University. Together, their work has had a lasting impact on the field of curriculum studies, and it has been transformative for me and my students.

“I am especially excited to offer this opportunity to the teachers in our community, as I believe the insights Bruce and Christy provide will help us all find deeper levels of learning by attending to the beauty and interconnectedness in our teaching environments.”

Uhrmacher and McConnell, renowned in the field of curriculum studies, will share innovative strategies for educators to enhance their teaching practices. Their presentation will explore how incorporating aesthetic and ecological perspectives can foster more meaningful and impactful teaching. This event is open to the public and is highly recommended for teachers and university faculty alike.

“We are excited to come to Minot and collaborate with educators on how aesthetic and ecological approaches can make teaching more purposeful and enriching,” Uhrmacher and McConnell said in a joint statement. “Our goal is to share ideas that help teachers create meaningful connections with their students. We very much look forward to engaging in thoughtful dialogue with the Minot community.”

Earlier in the day, Uhrmacher and McConnell will work with teachers from Minot Public Schools in two professional development sessions, scheduled from 8:30-10 a.m. and 2-3:30 p.m. at the Minot Area Workforce Academy. Interested teachers should contact their building principal to participate.

For more information about the event, contact Conn by EMAIL or by phone 701-858-3267.
