Onward: An interview with Bill Harbort

MINOT, N.D. – New York native and Syracuse University grad Bill Harbort joined Minot State’s art department in 1996. He teaches foundation art, graphic design, and illustration courses. His fun and unique teaching approach encourages his students to continually ask questions while providing them with the necessary foundation. Harbort has helped build the art community in Minot by co-founding and co-organizing NOTSTOCK, a signature art event held every fall since 2007.

Outside the classroom, Harbort has been a trusted mentor to many and reaches out to students, new and old, to help where he can and give advice when needed.

Minot State University Communications interviewed Harbort and invited him to share his experiences throughout his time at Minot State University.

Can you give us a little background before your time at Minot State?
BH: Prior to teaching, I worked as a package designer for Revlon, as an art director for a children's educational software company and built a reputation as an award-winning automotive artist.

What are some of the areas that made you choose Minot State in the beginning?
BH: Opportunities to contribute to an outstanding art department.

How have you adapted your teaching methods to incorporate advancements in technology and changes in the art world?
BH: Although my teaching methods evolve with new technology, I continually embrace foundation principles in visual communications and the formal elements in art making.

What projects or courses do you particularly enjoy teaching, and why?
BH: I especially enjoy "real world" assignments for example, this semester, my ART 375 students designed and illustrated stickers, magnets, and mini prints for sale in a special pop-up shop kiosk at the Northwest Art Center. This new Northwest Art Center (NAC) pop-up shop is debuting as part of a class project in ART 375 Professional Practices for Artists. This unique class not only addresses art and design challenges but moves beyond the aesthetic and into art entrepreneurship. Students are exploring the relationship of art and commerce by creating products and inventory. The kiosk platform is hosted by the art friends of the Northwest Arts Center. Thanks for their commitment to the NAC.

What are some of the high points of your teaching career at MSU?
BH: Keeping in touch with graduates and following their careers and lives!

Can you share an example of a memorable student project or assignment?
BH: Too many to list, but I especially enjoy exposing students to a concept or technique and watching them engage and get fully immersed in an assignment!

What advice do you give to students aspiring to pursue a career in the arts?
BH: Be aware of the gamut of opportunities and art careers that art presents!

How do you prepare your students for the challenges and opportunities they may encounter in the art industry?
BH: Teach them to always look, think, and chase the words; how and why.

Could you tell us about your life outside of work, family, hobbies, or other interests?
BH: Family, making art, automobiles, and two terrible dogs.
