Roots: Art students to showcase artwork in Senior Capstone Exhibition

MINOT, N.D. – Three Minot State University art students are exhibiting in the annual senior art exhibition: Bernadine Stevens, Cassidy Holmes, and Jyris Jiles. Entitled Roots, the exhibition features each artist’s works tying back to their own definition of the word. Roots will open with a reception at the Northwest Arts Center on Friday, May 5, at 6:30 p.m. and be on display until June 10.

Capstone is the culminating experience for art majors, allowing them to apply what they have learned in their time at Minot State University. This exhibition commemorates their years of art experience at the university level and showcases their skills.

Bernadine Stevens, an artist from New Town focuses on ceramics and drawing in her show titled Nostalgia. Her artwork is closely tied to her relationship with her family and heritage, connecting to a feeling of nostalgia.

Stevens states, “This current body of work explores the relationship of nostalgia and how it can be explored in different mediums. I view the body of work as homage to my culture, heritage, childhood, and identity.”

Cassidy Holmes is an artist from Spartanburg, South Carolina with a primary focus on mixed media sculpture for her show titled +Phototaxis. Her work ties to a personal connection with the life cycle and childhood interests in insects.

Jyris Jiles is an artist from Milwaukee, Wisconsin who focuses on photography in his show titled Ghetto History. Jiles uses photography to introduce viewers to the perspective of living in Milwaukee, displaying the cycles perpetuated by those involved in gang violence and the lives lost from it.

A reception will be held at the Northwest Arts Center in the Walter Piehl Gallery on Friday, May 5 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. There will be a gallery talk with the artists at 7 p.m. Both exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

While at the Northwest Arts Center, the exhibition will be available for viewing Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday 1-5 p.m. It is closed holidays. The Walter Piehl Gallery is located on the lower level of the Gordon B. Olson Library at Minot State University, with its own entrance on the south side of the library. The exhibition and related events are free and open to the public.

This exhibition is funded in part by a grant from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the state legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
