Freezin’ for a Reason returns to the Minot community

MINOT, N.D. – The Minot community is invited to help fill the Donation Station with food and the coffers with cash this weekend, Nov. 20 and 21.

Freezin’ for a Reason, hosted by the Minot State University Student Social Work Organization (SSWO), will be held in the Marketplace Foods 1620 South Broadway location from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. both days.

“Food donations will go to the Men’s Winter Refuge and cash donations will go to Project Bee, formally the YWCA. They’re opening up a warming center so we wanted to give them our monetary donations to get that jump started,” said Jenna Metcalf, Minot State social work senior, SSWO president, and Freezin’ for a Reason co-chair.

“We weren’t able to do this last year because of COVID so we’re bringing it back this year,” added Shelby Stuckey, Minot State social work senior and Freezin’ for a Reason chair. “This year, hopefully we’ll bring it back into the minds of people, especially since the Men’s Winter Refuge really depends on this event.”

Minot State SSWO members and volunteers stand in the cold and “freeze” to experience homelessness firsthand. Individuals can participate by dropping off food or monetary contributions at the parking lot or by “freezing” with the MSU SSWO.

“It’s all hands-on deck so we can make this as successful as it can be,” said Stuckey. “We want to make it memorable so people remember that this is a big deal for the community. We’re excited to be bringing it back after COVID.”
