MINOT, N.D. – The Northwest Arts Center and Flat Tail Press will host printmaker Reinaldo Gil Zambrano on Minot State University’s campus Nov. 12-15.

Zambrano’s solo show, “Malao,’” is currently on display at the Northwest Arts Center through Thursday, Nov. 19 and presents relief printing as a storytelling tool, using the medium to explore human relationships, universal experiences, and the idea of home.

On Friday, Nov. 13, he will work with students to create an editioned print and will give an art seminar talk at 12 p.m. in Aleshire Theater, Hartnett Hall. A public reception and online viewing will be held that night from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Northwest Arts Center. The event will include a livestreamed artist talk on Facebook @NorthwestArtsCenter. Both exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

Zambrano was the Northwest Arts Center “Americas 2019: Paperworks” Best of Show winner.

“Standing in front of one of Reinaldo’s prints is like experiencing a new but familiar memory, whether a glimpse from childhood, a tale told, or your mother’s soup,” said Greg Vettel, Northwest Arts Center director. “The details might be different, but the nostalgia is shared. He taps into a collective existence through his practice and shows us that even across cultures and continents, we have a single human story.”

Zambrano’s narratives raise questions of daily issues experienced equally by people across culture and borders by using relief printing for illustration and reflection. Beginning at an early age, he began collecting unique stories from random social encounters that highlighted the common aspects of the human identity. These stories later enriched the visual narratives of his drawing and relief prints.

Originally from Caracas, Venezuela, he moved to Spokane, Washington after receiving his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Idaho. Zambrano started RGZprintz, has been involved in two community art collectives, and cofounded the Spokane Print & Publishing Center in 2019. His desire to promote printmaking and artistic collaboration has led him towards the development of projects such as “The Ink Rally” and “Spokane Print Fes’” with other local non-profits. He is currently an assistant professor of art at Gonzaga University.

The Northwest Arts Center is located on the lower level of the Gordon B. Olson Library, with its own entrance on the south side of the library. The center is open on adjusted hours this fall, Tuesday through Saturday, from 1-5 p.m. and by special arrangement.

This program is funded in part by a grant from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the state legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
