Community unites for 99th annual ‘Messiah’

MINOT, N.D. – Handel’s “Messiah” will take place on the Ann Nicole Nelson Hall stage at Minot State on Sunday, Dec 8 at 4 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, brings together many local musical groups and individual community singers.

“If you are interested in being a singer in the choir, you can join our rehearsals in Old Main Room 121 on the campus of Minot State University,” Emerson Eads, Minot State director of choral activities and assistant professor of music, said. “Scores will be supplied to all volunteer singers.”

Choral rehearsals will take place on Nov. 24 and Dec. 1 from 3-4 p.m. On Dec. 8, the orchestra will rehearse from 1-2 p.m., directly followed by the tutti — or full dress — rehearsal from 2-3 p.m. Attire for all performers is concert black.

“The Minot State Division of Music is proud to present the 99th annual ‘Messiah’ featuring Minot’s premier vocal ensembles: The Heritage Singers, The Minot Chamber Chorale, Voices of Note, The Minot State University Concert Choir, along with MSU faculty and members of the Minot Symphony Orchestra. Soloists will include MSU students and members of the community,” Eads said. “A freewill offering will support the Dr. Joseph M. and Jackie Hegstad Scholarship and the John and Patricia Strohm Music Scholarship funds, both of which assist voice students at Minot State.”

Handel’s “Messiah” was originally an Easter offering, first appearing on a Dublin stage in 1742, before becoming the Christmas season tradition it is today. The “Messiah” has been a fixture of the Minot holiday season for over 100 years and has been performed continuously since 1929.
