Biology Department presents Darwin Day 2018

“This has always been a fun event for all. We want to, again, open our doors to the community and high school students from the area and together explore evolutionary biology.”
Alexandra Deufel, chair and professor, Department of Biology

MINOT, N.D. – For the 10th year in a row, Darwin Day returns to Minot State University Feb. 8-9. Darwin Day is a global celebration of science and reason, focusing on how all living creatures evolve.

MSU’s Darwin Day celebration begins Feb. 8 with students Dakota Brown and Samantha Huether discussing their experiences with DNA sequencing while working with professor Paul Lepp, whose research focus is in the area of microbial ecology and evolution. The event, titled, “"Analysis of Tick-Associated Bacterial Diversity using Nanopore Real-time DNA Sequencing" will be held in the auditorium at Cyril Moore Science Center at 6 p.m.

On Feb. 9 from 8:30 a.m. to noon, there will be a variety of biology activities about evolution, geared toward high school students. Tours of the greenhouse and research labs are open to the general public starting at 9 a.m. on the second floor of the science center. On the greenhouse tours, they can learn about plant diversity. On the lab tours, they can learn about ongoing research at Minot State into the neurobiology of addiction, eye evolution, geology, and more.

“This has always been a fun event for all,” said Alexandra Deufel, chair and professor within the Department of Biology. “We want to, again, open our doors to the community and high school students from the area and together explore evolutionary biology.”
