English Placement Exam Information

College Composition I (ENGL 110) is required as part of Minot State's General Education curriculum. Meeting one of the following requirements will allow you to enroll directly into ENGL 110.


  • I have an ACCUPLACER Next Gen Writing score of 256 or higher.
  • I have an  ACCUPLACER WritePlacer score of 5 or higher.


  • I have a  ACT English subscore of 18 or higher.


  • I have a SAT Evidence Based Reading and Writing subscore of
    • 490 or higher (took exam after September 2018)
    • 480 or higher (took exam between March 2016 and September 2018)


  • I successfully completed ENGL 110 through one of the following: AP-Advanced Placement, Dual Credit, or Transfer Course. Confirm final, official transcript/test score has been received by Minot State.
  • I will be 25 or older at the start of the term.
  • I am transferring 24 or more credits.

*Make sure you have sent ALL of your ACT/SAT scores to Minot State as your highest subscore will be used for placement purposes.

What if I do not meet one of the above criteria?

  • take a placement exam (strongly encouraged), or
  • enroll in a developmental English course (no college credit)

When and where can I take the placement exam?
You can take the placement exam on campus the morning of New Student Orientation or on a different date which can be scheduled prior to orientation by calling the Minot State Testing Center at 701-858-3830.
