Annual Recognition Awards for 2021-2022

Minot State University honored its 2021-22 Board of Regents Faculty and Staff Achievement Awards award winners at the conclusion of the academic year.

Faculty Achievement Awards
This program was established in 1985 by the Burlington Northern Foundation. In 1990 the Board of Regents established a second award and now solely supports the awards to recognize outstanding university teaching. The intent of the award is to recognize, reward, and motivate excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.

Joe Collette, associate professor in the division of Science is recognized for outstanding service to the university and community. Dr. Collette has demonstrated an active dedication to service at all levels at Minot State University since his initial appointment in 2014. He serves as webmaster and Facebook editor for the Geoscience department and the Geoscience newsletter, where he continuously promotes the department and the university as a whole. He has served on various university committees and currently serves as the Faculty Senate President. He served as president of the North Dakota Academy of Science and guided it through a pandemic disrupted year and now serves as an advisor to the current president. He is engaged in the community and routinely gives talks on geology topics at local schools.

Lesley Magnus, professor in the communication sciences and disorders department is recognized for her scholarly work. She has made significant contributions in the past year alone. She has contributed four papers in published conference proceedings and abstracts. Dr. Magnus has contributed to seven invited conference presentations and she currently has two works in progress. Her publishing and presentation record include co-author to a book chapter, co-author to articles published in peer-related journals, and numerous international and national presentations.

Beth Marschner, assistant professor in teacher education and kinesiology, is recognized for the teaching award. Dr. Marschner teaches in the Exercise Science and Rehabilitation Program and brings real work applications of what she is teaching into the classroom. This has included bringing patients into the classroom to share their cases with students. This facilitated learning for students with the experience of taking a patient from the assessment or diagnostic phase all the way through the treatment phase. She facilitates individual growth of students through mentoring, advising, and shared inquiry. Dr. Marschner maintains her North Dakota Physical Therapist license and her North Dakota Athletic Training license, which is a valuable resource for students and faculty alike.

Staff Achievement Awards
The Board of Regents Staff Achievement Award was established in 1991. The Board of Regents established the award to recognize university staff members for outstanding service to the University and the community.

Lauralee Dammen - administrative assistant in the information technology department is one of the staff recipients this year. Lauralee spends most of her time with students helping them with laptops, emails, and BlackBoard problems. She has become the expert in setting up all kinds of phones to work with our email system. Her work with vendors has been critical in saving the university thousands of dollars by identifying errors in billing from vendors, resulting in savings that can amount to three or four thousand dollars some months. Her interactions with faculty and staff are outstanding and she consistently goes above and beyond to meet their expectations.

Amanda Francis - staff member in the office of design and print services is another recipient of the staff award. Her work is the face of MSU to prospective students as Enrollment Services is almost exclusively her campus client. She also receives the bulk of the athletics print and design work. Beyond these two departments she works on an array of projects coming from across campus from not only MSU but also Dakota College at Bottineau. Amanda’s work often extends beyond traditional print media and includes billboards and content often used exclusively on the web.

Tricia Houmann - has been with MSU since 2009 and serves as the benefits and payroll technician. Tricia is the perfect person to hold her position as the "first impression" of MSU to new faculty, staff, and students when helping them with their new hire paperwork and assisting them with their benefits. Her unassuming personality and pleasant demeanor immediately put people at ease, so they do not feel as though they are asking trivial questions. She is very responsive to any requests and her attention to detail is outstanding. In the absence of an HR director, she graciously assisted the VPAF with additional duties outside of her regular responsibilities.
