English 110 Placement

Enrolling in ENGL 110: College Composition I

The general education program at Minot State University provides students with a broad base of knowledge and essential skills that facilitate the exploration of personal interests, potential career trajectories, and opportunities for professional growth. To enhance students' written, oral, and quantitative competencies, they must take core courses in oral and written communication (9 credits) and quantitative reasoning (minimum 3 credits).

The foundational general education written communication course is ENGL (English) 110: English Composition I, which provides guided practice in college-level reading, writing, and critical thinking with an emphasis on the writing processes and on approaches to critical reading. Those who need support with writing may take ASC 88: College Composition Lab in the same semester they take ENGL 110. Those who need further support first enroll in ASC 87: College Writing Prep. After they pass that course with a 'C' or better, they may enroll in ENGL 110.

You may enroll directly in ENGL 110: College Composition I (3 credits) if you received one of the following test scores:
  • ACT English Subtest: 18 or higher
  • SAT Writing Subtest: 430 or higher
  • SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (taken 3/2016–8/2018): 480 or higher
  • SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (taken 9/2018 or later): 490 or higher
  • Accuplacer WritePlacer (taken before January 28, 2019): 5–8
  • Accuplacer Next Gen Writing (starting January 28, 2019): 256–300
