Policy: Alcohol Exceptions for University-Sponsored Events
Aligned with NDUS Policy 918 & Minot State University Alcohol Guidelines
I. Purpose
This policy establishes procedures and requirements for requesting, reviewing, and approving exceptions related to the possession, service, or consumption of alcohol at university-sponsored events and activities associated with Minot State University.
The policy is intended to:
- Ensure compliance with North Dakota University System (NDUS) Policy 918 and applicable state law
- Promote responsible hosting practices
- Reduce institutional and individual liability exposure
- Protect the health, safety, and welfare of students, employees, and guests
- Provide a consistent review process for events involving alcohol
The university recognizes that select events involving alumni, donors, community partners, conference attendees, or university guests may include alcohol service when appropriate safeguards and approvals are in place. Complete this form for approval: Alcohol Beverage Request
II. Alcohol Exceptions for Student Events
If students are the primary audience of the event, including alcohol, please complete the following questions at the following link: Elevated Risk Event Request
III. Approval Timeline
A complete Alcohol Exception Request Electronic Form must be submitted no fewer than fourteen (14) calendar days before the event date.
Late or incomplete submissions may be denied or deferred.
The President may authorize expedited review only under exceptional institutional circumstances.
IV. Review & Approval Process
Requests will be reviewed by:
- Office of the President
The university reserves the right to:
- Approve with conditions
- Deny requests
- Cancel approved events due to safety or compliance concerns
Final approval authority rests with the President of the university.
