Agency Description: The mission of HIA Hospice is to provide comfort and care through life’s journey. Our vision is to enrich every person’s life by honoring their goals and priorities, and providing the right care, in the right place, at the right time. We are where you need us. Our service area stretches across more than 60,000 square miles of rural and urban terrain in both North Dakota and Minnesota. We have offices in Fargo, Grand Forks, Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls, Thief River Falls, Bismarck, Valley City, Jamestown, Devils Lake, and Minot.
Volunteer Position Duties:
Patient Care - Volunteers assist our patients and their families. Volunteers provide companionship to patients, which may include reading, visiting and other one-on-one activities, and help with errands or light housekeeping.
Respite Care - Volunteers relieve caregivers for short periods of time so they may take a break.
Pathway - Volunteers are present at the bedside of a hospice patient who is actively dying.
Courier - Volunteers pick up and deliver supplies and medications to hospice patients.
Office - Volunteers greet visitors and assist with filing, data entry, mailings and other clerical duties.
Special Events - Volunteers assist at fundraising events and host booths at health and wellness fairs.
Celebration Bears - Volunteers sew bears made from a hospice patient’s clothing for the family or loved ones as a keepsake to celebrate the patient’s memory.
Special roles: Do you have a special talent or skill? We are always looking for individuals with special skills, such as hairstylists, pet therapists and massage therapists, to provide additional comfort and care to our patients.
Position Requirements: If you’re interested in volunteering with HIA Hospice, the first step is to submit an application at https://www.hrrv.org/volunteer/apply. Once your application is received, a volunteer coordinator will contact you to discuss your interests, goals, history, availability, position requirements, and more, as well as answer any questions you might have.
Volunteers are carefully screened through the completion of a background check, tuberculosis blood test and personal reference check. We provide training to all volunteers to help ensure you feel prepared for your role and confident in your skills.
There is no minimum amount of time you must agree to volunteer each week, month or year; however, we ask for a six-month commitment if at all possible.
Other Information: Volunteers provide critical support for our day-to-day work while changing lives and truly making a difference in their communities. Whether spending time with patients, sewing bears or giving a hair cut, volunteers are an essential part of the Hospice team. We have more than 400 devoted volunteers of all ages and backgrounds throughout our service area. They all have one thing in common: a desire to help others and give back.
