About Us

Mission Statement/Purpose

The Looyenga Volunteer Center connects MSU students with volunteer opportunities. Students may need volunteer hours to fulfill course or program requirements, or simply want to engage with and serve their community. Whatever the reason, it is our mission to help volunteer students and organizations connect with each other because community involvement is an impactful experience for everyone. Volunteering is a great way to develop your professional and leadership skills! The Looyenga Volunteer Center is one of the ways Minot State University empowers you to be seen, be heard, and belong.

You can find us at Room 101 in Old Main or email us for additional assistance.

History

The Looyenga Volunteer Center is one of many leadership projects that is run by students with the assistance and support of leadership faculty. The idea for the Looyenga Volunteer Center originated in the Seminars in Leadership Development course where students learn “…effective, compassionate, and ethical leadership within the leader/follower dynamic.”

The Volunteer Center is a multiple semester project that was created in the spring of 2021 by Tanner Thompson and Melanie Macpherson. The project was picked up and continued in Spring 2022 by Jane Brodie, Trevor Paulson, Sam Aannerud, and Emma Condit. Help and support was provided by faculty members Jan Repnow and James Sturm.  Kevin Vandal continued the project in the fall of 2023 as part of the LEAD 301 class.

The Volunteer Center is a resource that all MSU students can count on for their volunteering needs. Whether that is for a student’s course grade, program, or for service to the community, the Looyenga Volunteer Center will help students connect with meaningful opportunities.
