Local author to visit Minot State

MINOT, N.D. – Local North Dakota writer Denise Lajimodiere will visit Minot State University on Thursday, March 23 with free events open to the public.

From 3-4 p.m., Lizzy LeRud, Minot State literature and rhetoric associate professor, will lead a discussion with Lajimodiere about her fourth collection of poetry, “His Feathers Were Chains.” The event will be held at the Gordon B. Olson Library.

“Lajimodiere’s poetry makes evident the great beauty, history, and enduring significance of Indigenous peoples in the Northern Plains region,” said LeRud. “This is a rare opportunity to engage directly with an author in an education setting, and her presence on campus will increase our awareness of the region and our place in the surrounding world.”

Later that evening, from 7-8 p.m., the author will read from her poetry collection in the Swain Hall Third Floor Atrium. Following the reading, Lajimodiere will be available for a book signing, with books available for purchase.

A recently retired associate professor of educational leadership at North Dakota State University, Lajimodiere is a citizen of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa. She is the recipient of a Gold Medal from the Midwest Book Awards, as well as a Silver and Bronze Medal awardee from the Independent Book Publishers Association.

“We chose Lajimodiere's work because it has so much to teach us about North Dakota's past and present, a physical and emotional landscape that her writing brings to life” said LeRud. “She is a scholar-storyteller, someone who offers both profound insights and great healing through her words.”

In addition to the community discussion and book reading, Lajimodiere will also meet with aspiring writers on campus and discuss her poetry with LeRud’s contemporary poetry class.

Lajimodiere’s visit to Minot State is hosted by the Division of World Languages and Cultural Studies, Department of English Literature and Writing, and the Gordon B. Olson Library and sponsored by the office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
