MINOT, N.D. – Over the past two years, Tyler Sinden has been involved in just about every marketing opportunity he was offered.

He was a part of the Severson Entrepreneurship Club for two years, in DECA for two years, was the president of Minot State DECA this past year, and has worked at the MSU Wellness Center. He also finished up an internship with Bev Naps Inc., working with both Dak Jam and Elevation as a multimedia marketing specialist, and worked with the MSU wrestling program with their social media platforms.

Those experiences have enhanced his education at Minot State University and shaped his future.

“I think working with these different teams has helped me start to narrow my focus down more, and I’ve been able to better focus on what I truly do enjoy doing,” he said. “They both have given me a vast amount of experience in these fields that I would otherwise not have. I learned a lot along the way and met and grew with some awesome people.”

The Belle River, Ontario native is a triple major in marketing, entrepreneurship, and international business. Sinden remembers the personal service he received from the University’s enrollment staff as a major reason for eventually choosing Minot State.

“I wanted to go to school in America and Minot State was one of my top three choices,” he said. “The staff in enrollment got back to me quickly and made the whole process easy. It was just a place that seemed like they actually cared about students.”

He plans to take those three majors, along with his internship and various work experiences, to eventually start his own marketing or production company. For now, after being approved for OPT (Optical Practical Training), he plans to move to Colorado and work in the marketing field to expand on his practical experience.

This past semester has been difficult on students like Sinden who prefer face-to-face interactions compared to the current remote instruction, but he believes his experience at MSU has pushed him as an individual.

“I got to move away from home and be on my own; that helped me grow as an individual and start to learn what I truly care about and what I enjoy doing,” he said.

The University’s small class size also lent to his strengths as a student.

“Classes are typically not overwhelmed with students,” Sinden said. “This provides the opportunity for the teachers to actually know your name and get to know you personally, where they actually care about your success and are always willing to talk and help you along the way.”

While he does not have one specific memory that stands out during his time at Minot State, his overall work with DECA provided some of his best memories of school.

“DECA has been one of the best aspects and choices I have made,” Sinden said. “I have met so many different people through the organization. Nationals last year was awesome, and I got to meet like-minded individuals from all over the country and was really looking forward to this year for all the new members, but unfortunately unable to attend. The networking aspect of DECA is second to none.

“The whole experience of going to school here has just been a great time and memory that will never be forgotten.”
