Office of Sponsored Programs

Grant Planning and Submission Deadlines

The following timeline should be considered when preparing a grant for submission. Please contact the Office of Sponsored Programs for assistance with this process. Early and frequent communication is key to a smooth process.

  1. Draft your grant proposal idea.
  2. Find a funding opportunity through Atom Grants, Grants.gov, other sources, or by asking OSP.
  3. Inform OSP of your grant writing plans as soon as possible, preferably at least one month prior to submission.
  4. Write your proposal and prepare a budget. Allow plenty of time and start early. A minimum of thirty (30) days from start to finish is a reasonable time frame.
  5. Complete the required MSU pre-approval process. Begin this process 10 business days before the submission deadline. A finalized budget and abstract are required for this process.
  6. Seek feedback approximately one to two weeks prior to the submission deadline.
  7. Finalize your proposal.
  8. Prepare the proposal for submission. At least 48 hours (two business days) prior to the submission deadline, coordinate with OSP to compile all final documents for grant submission.
  9. Coordinate with OSP for the grant submission process. Preferably, grants are submitted one business day prior to the listed due date. This allows time for technology glitches or unforeseen issues.
