Minot State / BIS / Information for Faculty Advisors
Bachelor of Individualized Studies (BIS)

Information for Faculty Advisors

Faculty advisors play a significant role in the development of students’ BIS academic plans, so students should identify advisors early in the process. Students combine coursework largely from two or three disciplines to design their major, and having a faculty advisor from each of those disciplines ensures that students choose the most appropriate courses. Faculty advisors are also part of the Academic Plan approval process, signing off on plans prior to submission to the Interdisciplinary Studies Advisory Council.

After a student’s Academic Plan is approved, faculty advisors continue to play an important role. While students pursue their program, they should meet on a regular basis with their advisors. This is particularly important as students plan for enrollment in IDS 360 Directed Project. The advisors help each student plan a project that integrates the disciplines that are part of his or her academic plan, and provide direction during implementation of the project.
