Prior Learning Assessment

You’ve worked hard. Get the credit you deserve.

Your previous work and volunteer experience or professional development may qualify you for college credits through Prior Learning Assessment.

You can earn Prior Learning Assessment college credit for certain classes at Minot State in three ways:

  • Credit by experience. You will create a portfolio demonstrating your experience in a given area.
  • Credit by exam. You will take an exam written by the faculty who normally teach the class to show your proficiency in the subject.
  • Credit by professional certification. If you have completed a professional certification, you may be able to earn class credit.

Grading: PLA credits that are successfully completed with show as an “S” on your transcript, not as a letter grade.

Credits: Credit established by PLA will not count toward a student’s term load, nor are they considered credits earned in residence.

Cost: PLA credits include a non-refundable fee of 50% of the regular per credit tuition charge. Credit by exam, professional certification, and portfolio assessment credits are not eligible for financial aid, including federal and state grants, scholarships, loans, Minot State scholarships, and tuition waivers.
