Welcome

The Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) degree program offers a flexible, individualized curriculum designed to meet the needs of students who cannot or do not want to complete a more traditional degree program.

The BGS program serves as a generalist’s degree program for students whose educational objectives are not aligned with an existing major at Minot State University. Through individualized advising, the program helps students define their educational goals and design interdisciplinary curricula drawing on a variety of course offerings.

Students who want to complete a degree by combining particular disciplines may want to consider the Bachelor of Individualized Studies (BIS) program. Click here for a description of the differences between the BGS and BIS programs.

The BGS program also serves as a degree completion program––a program that allows students who have completed most of the requirements for an undergraduate degree to finish in a timely manner. This option is useful for Minot State University students who have nearly finished a major, but for whatever reason cannot or do not want to complete the major requirements, or simply need to graduate sooner than they would otherwise be able. The BGS program is also useful for students who have been away from school for a time, and who want to return to school to complete a degree but not a particular major.

The Bachelor of General Studies program falls under Interdisciplinary Studies at Minot State, along with the Bachelor of Individualized Studies. Both are overseen by the director of Interdisciplinary Studies and the Interdisciplinary Studies Advisory Council
