Opportunities for Professional Development

Remaining current on topics related to academic advising can sometimes be a challenge for both new and experienced advisors. Policies and procedures often change and understanding the needs of specific student populations can be overwhelming. Don’t worry, the Academic Advising Council is here to help! Are there specific academic advising topics in which you would like a refresher? If so, the advising council will bring the information to you! Please take a look at the list below of possible topics for professional development and let an advising council member know if there are areas your department/division would like to learn about. You are welcome to submit topics that are not included on the list below, as well.  Based on your requests, the advising council will work with faculty and staff who are knowledgeable in the requested area(s) to come to you to share information and answer questions.

Possible topics for professional development include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Advising student athletes
  • Advising first-generation students
  • Advising students receiving military benefits (i.e. Veteran, Active Duty)
  • Advising transfer students (i.e. Course substitutions, course equivalencies)
  • Advising international students
  • Advising students wanting to study abroad
  • Advising students admitted with the provision of enhanced advising
  • Advising students interested in the Honors Program
  • Advising online students
  • Learning about available student services (i.e. Counseling Services, Residence Life & Housing, Student Health, Academic Support Center - Access Services, Career Services, POWER, Peer Tutoring, Starfish, Supplemental Instruction, Engagement Honor Roll, First-Year Experience, New Student Programs, Writing Center)
  • Understanding basics of financial aid and satisfactory academic progress
  • Using Campus Connection
  • Using Starfish (i.e. Advising appointments, advisor role in early alerts, Starfish 401 - more than the basics)
  • Understanding FERPA
  • Use of basic advising forms (i.e. Application for Graduation, Grade Appeal Form, Major/Minor Change Form, Overload Approval, Petition to Add, Late Course Drop Request, Withdrawal Procedures/Form)
  • Understanding holds/service indicators and which impact enrollment
  • Math & English placement and ACCUPLACER (placement exams)
  • Other topics:
