Outstanding Academic Advisor Awards

Nominations due by Friday, March 29, 2024 at 4:30 p.m.

The Academic Advising Council is seeking nominations for the 2023-24 Minot State University Outstanding Academic Advisor Awards. These awards are designed to highlight the importance of academic advising and bring recognition to academic advisors at Minot State who have made significant contributions to academic advising and student success.

Award Categories:
The Outstanding New Academic Advisor Award is given to recognize an academic advisor who has demonstrated exemplary service and has worked as an academic advisor at Minot State for three or fewer years.
The Outstanding Academic Advisor Award is given to recognize an academic advisor who has demonstrated exemplary service and has worked as an academic advisor at Minot State for four or more years.

Selection Criteria:

  • Strong interpersonal skills that include a caring, helpful attitude toward advisees, faculty, and/or staff.
  • Ability to assist students in recognizing their academic strengths and weaknesses and monitor student progress toward academic, career, and personal goals.
  • Accurate communication of university policies and procedures and academic expectations.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of degree requirements as reflected in the Minot State Undergraduate Catalog.
  • Knowledge of appropriate campus resources for referrals.
  • Participation in and support of advisor development programs.
  • Availability to advisees/students, faculty, or staff.
  • Assistance and support to colleagues in the advisement process.
  • Knowledge and utilization of the Advisor Center in Campus Connection (i.e., Academic Requirements Report, What-if Report, Planner, etc.).

Eligibility: Any faculty or staff member with significant advising responsibilities is eligible. An individual may receive the award once every three years. Current members of the selection committee are not eligible.

Nomination Procedure: Students, faculty, administrators, and others who are knowledgeable about the individual’s advising expertise are invited to submit nominations by Friday, March 29, 2024 at 4:30 p.m. Self nominations are also welcome. Letters of nomination must include a description of why the nominee is deserving of the award based on the established criteria. Additional letters of support are encouraged. Nominations may be submitted online or the pdf may be printed, filled out, and sent to the chair of the Academic Advising Council.

Selection Process: Members of the Academic Advising Council, consisting of faculty from each college, staff and students, will review nominations and letters of support and make a determination of the award recipients.

Recognition: The winners of the Outstanding Academic Advisor Awards will be recognized at the Minot State University Employee Appreciation Event in May 2024. Award recipients will receive a monetary award of $1,000 and a personalized recognition plaque. A recognition plaque of current and past award winners is also displayed on the MSU campus.
