Using Respondus LockDown Browser
The Respondus LockDown Browser (RLB) is a secure browser for taking assessments in Blackboard. It prevents the user from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during an assessment.
First, you need to download the RLB tool to your computer. When you do this, it will place a RLB icon on your desktop.
Download Instructions for Windows:
- Download Respondus LockDown Browser
- Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the install
- If you are prompted to REPLACE an existing version of Respondus Lockdown or select another school’s download, select REPLACE and it will overwrite older versions of the program.
- During the installation, select Yes if prompted to accept programs from Macrovision and Respondus.
Download Instructions for MACs:
- Download Respondus LockDown Browser
- Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the install
- During the installation, select Yes when prompted to run the Java application.
Second when you are ready to take a test protected by RLB, your standard browser will NOT work.
Instruction to access your Assessments after RLB has been installed:
- When the installation is complete, you will see the Respondus Lockdown icon on your desktop.
- Click on LockDown Browser shortcut icon that is now located on your computer's desktop.
- If you are operating a MAC, launch LockDown Browser from the Applications folder.
- If prompted to close a blocked program (e.g. screen capture, instant messaging), choose Yes when prompted.
- If you refuse to close down programs, the software will not launch and you will not have access to the courses testing materials.
- The link will take you to the MSU Online login page.
- Login using your standard Blackboard Username and Password.
- Select the Blackboard course you wish to take the assessment in
- Select the Assessments tool
- Find and select the desired test, quiz, or exam
- Then select the Begin Assessment button
- If you attempt to take the assessment without launching RLB, the test will be blocked.
- Once an assessment has been started with RLB, you cannot exit until the Finish button is clicked.
If you have problems downloading, installing, or taking an assessment with Respondus LockDown Browser, contact your instructor.
NOTE: You do not use RLB to take self-tests. If you do, it will lock your computer. The only way to get out of a self test is to shut down your computer and reboot the system.
