Nurturing leadership

MINOT, N.D. – Nestled within the vibrant community of Minot State University, Shawn Bennett has emerged as a dynamic force in campus leadership.

Originating from the quiet town of Grafton, Bennett brings a genuine sense of community and a passion for advocacy to his role as the current president of the Student Government Association (SGA).

Bennett's decision to attend Minot State was deliberate, as he sought an academic environment reminiscent of his hometown's close-knit nature. In a sea of universities, Minot State's reputation for fostering a familial atmosphere drew Bennett to a community where he could form lasting connections beyond the classroom.

"I chose to attend MSU because of its hometown feeling and strong sense of fellowship," he said.

As a psychology major, Bennett understands the significance of human connections, and Minot State's community has become integral to his educational journey.

"I love the people! Whether it be the faculty, staff, or students, MSU has some of the best people," he said.

Arriving at Minot state as a relative stranger, Bennett found himself on a quest for connection and engagement. This affection for the Minot State community extends beyond the academic realm, fueling his desire to participate actively in campus life.

"When I started at MSU, I knew very few people," Bennett said. “I was looking for opportunities to become more involved on campus.”

What began as a simple recommendation to attend an SGA meeting became a long-term commitment, with Bennett serving as an SGA senator before assuming the mantle of president.

"A friend of mine recommended I attend an SGA meeting,” Bennett said. “After that, the rest fell into place as I served two terms as an SGA senator and now as president,"

This evolution from a newcomer navigating the unfamiliar to the helm of student leadership underscores Bennett's dedication to effecting positive change and amplifying the voices of his peers.

The delicate balance between academics and leadership responsibilities is a formidable challenge, yet Bennett has navigated this tightrope with resilience, relying on a robust support system to overcome obstacles.

"One of the biggest challenges I have faced so far has been learning to manage being both a student and representative in SGA,” he said. “I have overcome this by utilizing my support system.

"Being a listener and advocate for the MSU student body, representing them in many areas, chairing SGA meetings, working alongside faculty and staff to make needed changes, and collaborating on the Student Center renovation planning.”

Success in student government, in his view, is predicated on solid advocacy and active involvement. As a leader with a keen eye on the future, Bennett outlines goals that are not only community-focused but also forward-thinking.

"I hope to help share the voices of the students throughout the creation of the Student Center renovation and focus on creating a more vibrant and representative senate for the students at MSU," he said.

These aspirations reflect a commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that the student body actively contributes to shaping Minot State's evolving landscape.

As he gets optimistic about the SGA's new trajectory, Bennett envisions its continuing growth as integral to MSU's overall development and encourages his fellow students to consider a leap into leadership.
