MSU students teach yoga, Group X on Spring Break

“Having the opportunity to teach internationally at the Breathless Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa was absolutely amazing. MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University students Katie Clark, Katie Eckmann, and Katelyn Sandy spent their Spring Break teaching yoga and Group X classes at Breathless Resort in the Mayan Riviera.

“Having the opportunity to teach internationally at the Breathless Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa was absolutely amazing,” Sandy said. “Instructing people from many different backgrounds was such a great learning experience. I have learned so much from this opportunity and encourage students to apply for opportunities like this one.”

This is the third time Minot State students have taught yoga and Group X classes internationally, instructing in three different locations. In the Fall 2016, a group of students taught in Jamaica, while last year MSU students taught in the Dominican Republic.

“Teaching in Cancun was an amazing experience that I will never forget,” Clark said. “I was fortunate to make new friends and teach tabata and sculpt classes. I could see that it brought a great start to everyone’s day.  The resort was amazing and so beautiful.  I am grateful for the opportunity that was provided to me.”

This experience provides MSU students with the opportunity to teach a diverse population in beautiful resorts challenging, them to be at the top of their game.  Minot State is the first university to provide this exciting opportunity for students.

“The experience of teaching at a resort in Mexico required me to think of new ways to make yoga work for a variety of levels, abilities, and cultures. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to teach in a different country,” added Eckmann.

The program, according to Terry Eckmann, chair of teacher education and kinesiology, is scheduled to continue each year with students selected after applying for the international teaching trip.
