SNDU and SCEC Clubs organizing Locally Exceptional Readers event
MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University’s Student North Dakota United (SNDU) and Student Council for Exceptional Children (SCEC) are organizing an initiative to distribute as many books as possible to area PK-6 students.
The Locally Exceptional Readers event will have special emphasis on meeting the educational needs of the students.
“Locally Exceptional Readers is a movement designed to create a bridge between the local bookstores and exceptional readers in elementary schools of our dear Minot community,” said SCEC Officer Whitney “Dayanne” Omeir. “Numerous Minot State University students and faculty from all backgrounds and knowledge have come together and decided to be that bridge. The bridge that will allow students to experience, discover, and learn more about many different cultures, places, and stories that can only be found in books from our community.”
To begin, SNDU and SCEC will be selling baked goods March 5-9 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., on the first floor of Old Main. The cost of the baked good will either be $1 or a new/gently-used donated children’s (PK-6) book.
“We are organizing a book drive to help raise books to give to local students here in Minot and the surrounding areas,” SNDU President Savannah Harbaugh said. “The SNDU and SCEC clubs are partnering together in hopes of raising a greater amount of books to give to more students than in previous years. Our hope is that we can hand out books to as many students as we can and have members from our clubs go out and read a book to the students. We will have book drops set up throughout campus and anyone is free to donate any books they feel students in elementary school would enjoy. There will also be a booth set up in Old Main where you can donate a book or money and get a treat.”
After the bake sale, the clubs will continue to accept new or gently used books through April 6. There will be tubs to donate books to in Old Main, Swain, Memorial, and the Student Center as well as at local bookstores and businesses in downtown Minot.
After the books have been collected, the clubs will work with local schools and classrooms to distribute the books to students, and this will include matching books with individual student’s educational needs and interests.
The books will be distributed to classroom across Minot and surrounding schools April 16-20.
